The 2024 Swope Art Museum William T. Turman Plein Air competition is open to all painters and is an Indiana Plein Air Painters Association  affiliated event. All works must be painted during the event period, June 13 – 16, and must be created in Terre Haute and Vigo County, Indiana. Qualified entries are eligible for up to $5000 in purchase and cash prizes.

$40 per entry. This fee allows for each artist to register up to 10 supports. Supports must be blank and have no prior drawing but may have a toned ground.  

Swope members at the $125 sustaining level or above are entitled to free entry in the competition.

Register online or during the event registration hours. 



  • Registration is between  8:00 am -12 pm on June 13, June 14, and June 15. 

    • Early bird registration is on June, 12 from 3-5 pm at the Swope Art Museum 

    • The last day to register is Saturday, June 15 by 12 pm

  • All artworks must be submitted between 11 am- 1 pm on Sunday, June 16 at Arts Illiana 

  • Reception and Awards 3-4 pm Sunday, June 16 at Arts Illiana 

  • All juried works will be shown in the William T. Turman Exhibition from June 21- July 28.

Meet our Juror 


M. Shawn Cornell 

This year’s juror for the William T. Turman Plein Air Competition is Missouri artist, Shawn Cornell. Cornell is an experienced plein air painter and one of the founders of the Missouri Plein Air Association.A full-time plein air painter since 2007, Cornell co-owns OA Gallery in Kirkwood, Missouri, where he displays his own work and others. Cornell had a solo exhibition at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph, Missouri in 2015.

Drawing Workshop with Stanley Lewis

June 8, 2024
9:30 am- 12:30 pm

Lewis taught painting at the Kansas City Art Institute and American University and is a past recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship. The drawing workshop will include and exclusive tour with the artist of his exhibition, Persistent Vision, at the museum.

Plein Air Workshop with Shawn Cornell

June 12, 2024

This workshop will be held in Maple Avenue Nature Park and will lead beginners through experienced painters through techniques for painting plein air

William T. Turman

This outdoor painting event is a tribute to William Turman, a preeminent plein air painter. Turman was the second director of the Swope Art Museum, and Chairman of the Indiana State University Art Department for 40 years. Turman was part of the rich history of Indiana landscape painters including T.C. Steele, William Merritt Chase, and William Forsyth.
