The first secretary of the Board of Managers, Carrie C. Schell gathered works for the collection and added important paintings and sculptures by Terre Haute and Indiana artists. Purchasing directly from artists, Schell then gifted the museum works of art by prominent Hoosier artists, including several Terre Haute women. Schell, the widow of a prominent local physician and surgeon Dr. Walker Schell, also used her considerable social connections to solicit gifts of art from old homes in the area. Paintings and sculptures by Theodore Clement Steele, Wentworth Parker and Janet Scudder are just some of the works that will be on view in this tribute to the Swope’s first secretary of the Board.
