October 5 – December 29, 2012
Haslem and Hodge Galleries
This year’s feature exhibition, organized in two parts, presents the work of founding director John Rogers Cox and the acquisitions he made for the museum including works by Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Charles Burchfield and Edward Hopper. Through his focus on acquiring work by contemporary American artists, Cox set the thematic course of the Swope as one of the earliest collections in the country to focus on American art.
Accompanying Dual Visions will be an interactive timeline representing the history of the museum in the context of local, national and world events. Visitors are encouraged to reminisce and to contribute pictures and descriptions of events from their own lives.
