Join us on December 16 at 6 PM for Artists on Art, with our speaker this month being Ian Carey.
Ian Carey is the Permanent Art Collections Curator at Indiana State University. Beyond his curatorial responsibilities, he is a Lecturer for the Political Science department. Before moving to Terre Haute, he as Thought courses in Painting, Drawing, The Philosophy of Art, and Museum Studies at California Polytechnic Humboldt, Illinois State University, and Illinois Wesleyan University. He is also a working artist that has shown his art Nationally. His artistic practice seeks to allegorically portray the difficulties and anxieties found within the day-to-day realities of the American working class.
Ian’s talk will reflect on recent acquisitions to the Permanent Art Collection at Indiana State University and how they relate to what Art Historian James Yood called the Chicago aesthetic. In addition, his talk will cover how certain art pieces within ISU’s collection played a part in this tradition. Finally, he will reflect on the inherent politics reflected in two distinct Chicago Art movements, the Chicago Imagist and the Chicago Monster Roster.
