Student Art Exhibition

Annual Exhibitions

Every year, the Swope Art Museum hosts three exhibitions that promote contemporary artists of the Wabash Valley, Greater Indiana, and surrounding states. The first, our Annual Student Art Exhibition, is presented in the spring (April – May) and focuses on young artists currently enrolled in K through 12 education in Vigo and surrounding counties. Our William T. Turman Plein Air Competition is our newest annual competition and exhibition.  Last, the Wabash Valley Exhibition, focuses on supporting and promoting artists from Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee.

Student Art Exhibition

This juried exhibition features artwork from elementary, middle, and high school students, highlighting their creativity and skills. The exhibition brings together a variety of artworks in different styles and mediums, offering a glimpse into the imaginative world of these young artists. This exhibition happens each spring.

William T. Turman Plein Air Exhibition

The William T. Turman Plein Air Exhibition was the culminating show of our inaugural William T. Turman Plein Air Competition hosted in June. This exhibition included the winning artworks juried by John DenHouter at the conclusion of the event. All painting showcased the beauty of Vigo County and Terre Haute. This outdoor painting event is a tribute to William Turman, a preeminent plein air painter. Turman was the second director of the Swope Art Museum, and Chairman of the Indiana State University Art Department for 40 years. Turman was part of the rich history of Indiana landscape painters including T.C. Steele, William Merritt Chase, and William Forsyth.
