Congratulations to our 54th Annual selected High School artists!

Juror’s statement:

Rob Millard-Mendez,

Professor of Art at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, Indiana

I would like to thank Edward Trover and the rest of the staff at the Swope for inviting me to be the juror for the 54th Annual Student Exhibition, it is a great honor. Thanks also go out to the students who submitted work to the exhibition, it takes courage to send your work out to be evaluated by a stranger. I would also like to thank the art teachers and parents who support and challenge the young artists who submitted work to the show. While jurying, I looked at a few different criteria: originality, strength of concept/content, and quality of execution.

The overall quality of the work in the show is quite high. I was impressed with the creativity in the work. There are many pieces that take risks and show strong design and drawing skills. Some of the work in the show is a bit somber, which is understandable, considering the events of the past twelve months. I made a conscious effort to choose pieces with bright colors and uplifting content. I hope that the show buoys the moods of viewers while also acknowledging that we have all been through a difficult time.

If you are a student who submitted work to the show and did not get in, I sincerely hope that you keep making your art in your own way! Jurying an exhibition like this one is (by its very nature) subjective. It is likely that a different juror would have chosen a very different show.
