Drawing Downtown Streetscapes

Ages 10 & up
July 19-23; A.M. Session (Code 603)

Go "on location and create street scene drawings. Students will use a variety of techniques to discover the subject matter that the downtown vicinity has to offer. Techniques such as one-point perspective, color, form and volume will be discussed and will aid the student in executing a streetscape. Students will require a permission slip from a guardian to attend outdoor classes.

Drawing with Charcoal & Pastel

Ages 8 & up
August 2-6; A.M. Session (Code 803)

Students will explore the techniques of dry mediums while learning basic drawing skills and the fun of self-expression.

Painting & Drawing: Make Color Come to Life

Ages 9 & up
July 12-16; P.M. Session (Code 512)

This course is developed for students interested in painting and drawing. Special emphasis will be placed on mixing and using color. The class will learn basic color theory, color schemes and how to mix the colors seen in everyday life.

Begin to Paint a Landscape with Acrylics & Watercolor!

Ages 5-9
June 21-25; A.M. Session (Code 301)

During this course, students will learn simple and effective methods of depicting landscape. Students will learn basic color theory, perspective, form and volume and will experiment with both watercolor and acrylic paints.

Advanced Painting: Become a Pro!

Ages 10 & up
July 19-23; A.M. Session (Code 602)

An intense study of advanced acrylic painting techniques covering realistic and abstract painting. Students will develop sketches and then create paintings on stretched canvases. The class will learn how to draw and paint still life, human and animal figures and abstract objects to accurately depict lights, darks and shadows.

Advanced Clay: Serious 3-D

Ages 10 & up
June 28-July 2; A.M. Session (Code 402)

This is an advanced clay class and will allow students to create complex vessels with lids and cylinder seals in addition to small sculptures. Children will learn how to add embellishments to their creations. Students will be using Della Robbia oven bake clay. Old clothes or an apron are recommended.

Creative Clay for Beginners

Ages 5-8
July 26-30; A.M. Session (Code 701)

Students will experiment with a variety of clay building styles including knee and elbow pots as well as coil and slab pots. Using found objects, the final work will be embellished with pattern and texture. Children will also learn how to create beads and pendants. Students well be using Della Rovvia oven bake clay. Old clothes or an apron are recommended.

Advanced Drawing - Line Markers

Ages 11 & up
June 21-25; A.M. Session (Code 303)

Line and mark making are the fundamentals of drawing. This course is designed for advanced students who love to draw and are eager to learn and develop advanced drawing skills. A wide range of drawing mediums will be used, including ink, charcoal, graphite and pastels.

Drawing Nature Out-of-Doors

Ages 9 & up
June 28-July 2; P.M. Session (Code 413)

Have fun out-of-doors while learning to depict the beauty of nature. Students will be drawing by observation at the Indiana State University campus. Subject matter ranges from insects and small animals to plants and trees. Students will require a permission slip from a guardian to attend outdoor classes.

Drawing the Human Form from Head to Toe

Ages 10 & up
July 12-16; P.M. Session (Code 513)

This is an advanced drawing class. Various drawing techniques will be introduced and elements such as volume, form, shading and lighting will be discussed. Students will draw from life depicting parts of the face and the human form.

Little Masters: Paint & Draw Like Your Favorite Artist

Ages 5-7
June 14-18; P.M. Session (Code 211)

Little Masters is a fun and easy class for younger children, offering painting, drawing and a broad range of other mediums. Projects will be based on the work of well-known American artists including Edward Hopper, Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton. Children will visit the Swope Art Museum and view works of art by these famous artists.

Clay for Kids

Ages 5-8
August 2-6; A.M. Session (Code 801)

This course is a hands-on class for younger children to explore one of the most versatile mediums. Students will create coil pots, American Indian vessels, imaginary animals and self portraits using Della Robbia oven bake clay. Old clothes or an apron are recommended.

Inside the Swope Art Museum:
Creating Your First Art Exhibit

Ages 11 & up
June 21-25; P.M. Session (Code 313)

Students will work on an independent project focusing on a topic or theme of their choice. Throughout the week, students will visit the Swope Art Museum for a "behind the scenes" look at art preparation and presentation. Students will then prepare for a final exhibit at the Swope Education Center.

Let's Make a Zoo with Different Materials Every Day

Ages 5-8
July 12-16; A.M. Session (Code 501)

What's at the zoo? Children will work as a team to fill the zoo with their favorite animals while using different materials each day. They will learn and discuss the unique and diverse characteristics of the animals through story time, drawing and coloring.

The American Art Time Machine: Art Around America

Ages 5-8
August 2-6; P.M. Session (Code 811)

Children will use an assortment of materials and will work on a new project every day. Students will visit the Swope Art Museum and projects will be based on works of art found in the permanent collection. This is a fun way for students to create art while learning about American art history.

Fiber Fun with Knitting

Ages 8-12
June 28-July 2; A.M. Session (Code 403)
In this fun class, children will learn about fiber and how to knit. Students will make needles and learn the basics of knitting through a project of their choice. If time allows, hand felting of fiber will be covered as well.

Intermediate Drawing

Ages 9 & up
June 14-18; P.M. Session (Code 213)

Explore the wonderful world of drawing! This class introduces the young artist to many drawing techniques and styles and develops artistic vocabulary. Students will draw from life out-of-doors and from the imagination in the classrooom. Students will require a permission slip from a guardian to attend outdoor classes.

Students will explore the techniques of dry mediums while learning basic drawing skills and the fun of self-expression.

Advanced Digital Photography

Ages 11 & up
July 19-23; P.M. Session (Code 613)

Students must bring their own digital camera on the first day of class and the remainder of the week. This course familiarizes students with the functions of the camera, fosters individual creativity and focuses on the importance of design elements in photography. Composition and communication inherent in photography will also be discussed. Students will require a permission slip from a guardian to attend outdoor class.

Fun with Digital Photography

Ages 11 & up
July 19-23; P.M. Session (Code 613)

This is a course for beginners. Students must bring their own digital camera on the first day of class and the remainger of the week. Topics include portraiture, landscape and architectural photography. Students will require a permission slip from a guardian to attend outdoor class.

Mask Making

Ages 5-8
July 12-16; P.M. Session (Code 511)

During this class students will learn a brief history of masks from various cultures. Students will then design and create their own large mask of papier-mâché from the planning and sketching stages to the painting, embellishing and finishing stages of their individual work. Special emphasis will be placed on color, design and detail.

Poster & CD Illustration I and II

Ages 10 & up
June 21-25; P.M. Session (Code 312)
June 28-July 2; P.M. Session (Code 412)

This is a two-week course for students who like music and drawing. Children may enroll in one or both courses. Cost for one session is $65 for museum members or $75 for non-members. Cost for both sessions is $110 for museum members or $120 for non-members.

Poster & CD Illustration surveys design trends, themes and typography used to create album/CD covers and musician posters. Students will explore a variety of mediums such as pencil, colored pencil, acrylic, watercolor and measuring tools in the design and creation of an enlarged CD cover or poster depicting the group of their choice.

Become a Sculptor

Ages 6 & up
June 21-25; A.M. Session (Code 302)

This course introduces children to unique sculpting materials and the many tools that shape them. Students will sculpt with materials including plasticine, clay, foam rubber, foil and wire. The class will be sculpting fantasy figures including dragons, fairies and elves. Realistic subject matter, such as the human face and animal figures, will also be explored.

Making Musical Instruments: Bring on the Band!

Ages 7 & up
June 21-25; P.M. Session (Code 311)

This course is created for children who love music and art. Students will make cool musical instruments including dancing bells and egg shakers, rubber band harps and spoons, panpipes, kazoos and drums. Of course, they will be playing them, too!

Puppet Pizzazz: Create Puppet Characters

Ages 5 & up
August 2-6; P.M. Session (Code 812)

An exciting session of creative puppet making! Students will create hand, mouth, rod and finger puppets and learn to make them come to life. A story will be written from which puppet characters will be developed and created.

Sewing Touchable Art

Ages 5 & up
June 28-July 2; P.M. Session (Code 411)

This is a course developed for children who like to sew. Students will learn how to create usable art including a patch-work lap quilt, a pillow cover, a cuddly stuffed animal, or a historic rag doll. Other projects will include multi-textured shadow boxes and wearable leather and felt accessories.

Build a Puppet Show & Stage for Parent & Child

Ages 4 & up
June 28-July 2; A.M. Session (Code 401)

Children will learn how to create hand, mouth, rod and finger puppets. They will also build a wearable show stage with curtains for their flying butterfly, bat or dragon characters. Students will develop funny voices, character movements and a story plan and will present a final stage show on the last day of class. Parental enrollment recommended for children ages 4 and 5.

Cartooning

Ages 6-9
June 14-18; A.M. Session (Code 201)

have fun cartooning while studying the use of line, texture, value and color. Storyboards will be created - just like the ones in the newspapers! Students will be encouraged to develop simple stories through pictures, gestures and conversation balloons.

Design: The Big Picture

Ages 8-12
July 26-30; A.M. Session (Code 702)

Learn the basic elements and language of 2-D design used by artists. Children will have the opportunity to experiment with different materials while studying the construction of landscape, figure and abstract design. The techniques of famous artists including Paul Jenkins, Robert Motherwell and Andy Warhol will be discussed. Students will visit the Swope Art Museum to study the many ways in which artists use line, color and composition.

Crazy Collage!

Ages 5-8
July 19-23; P.M. Session (Code 611)

Go crazy with collage! Collage is a fun and expressive art form and allows students to use a vast assortment of mediums. This class has infinite possibilities and will spur the creative process in every young artist.

Clay with Judy

Ages 8 & up
June 14-18; A.M. Session (Code 203), P.M. Session (Code 212)

Students will stretch their imagination by making unusual art objects such as rattles, garden people with attitudes, kaleidoscopes and bird houses. Texture, shape, color terminology and form will be emphasized as well as an appreciation for other's work. Final work will be fired in a Kiln. Old clothes or an apron are recommended.

Sculpting Stepping Stones for the House or Garden

(Ages 10 & up) July 12-16; A.M. Session (Code 502)
Students will learn about mixing and curing stone medium and will design and develop a theme or story surrounding their body of work. Materials including stencils, mosaic tiles, marbles and acrylic paint will be used to embellish the stones. A matching plaque or clay pot will also be created, encouraging thematic and conceptual thinking. Artwork can be displayed in or out-of-doors

My Very First Art Box: Mixed Media

Ages 5-8
July 19-23; A.M. Session (Code 601)

This class introduces young artists to creative materials and teaches them the fundamentals of art making. Students will personalize an art-supply box and portfolio to encase their materials and artwork. They will be introduced to different mediums and will keep and art journal of their creations.

Creating Technicolor Clothing with Tie-Dyes

Ages 11 & up
August 2-6; P.M. Session (Code 813)

Learn the ancient art of fabric coloring through the use of procion dyes. Using materials such as marbles, rubber bands, thread and salt, students will create vibrant and colorful t-shirts. Children will be encouraged to "go green!" by rejuvenating worn clothing made out of 100% cotton.

Creating Beautiful Batiks for Parent & Child

Ages 9 & up
July 26-30; A.M. Session (Code 703)

Learn the ancient art of wax resist and dye techniques known as batik. Students will create patterns which will be transferred to cotton cloth using a mixture of beeswax and paraffin. Using a cold dye method, which enables vibrant and long-lasting colors, students will make a wearable scarf or wall hanging.

Stepping Stones for Parent & Child

Ages 7 & up
August 2-6; A.M. Session (Code 802)

Learn about sculpture and design while creating stepping stones. Students will learn how to mix and cure the stone medium and will design patterns to be used on the stones. Materials from home can be permanently embedded in the stone creating an object of personal significance. Students will also sculpt a matching clay pot. Items can be displayed indoors but are also great for the outdoor garden! This is a fun way to spend some time with your child or grandchild while making art!.

Beginning Jewelry Making

Ages 7 & up
July 26-30; P.M. Session (Code 711)

This class will teach students all they need to know about making jewelry. Children will learn how to work with elastic cord, stringing wire, memory wire and metal wire to make various types of jewelry. Students will also learn to make earrings and dangles.

Going Green Recycled Jewelry

Ages 8 & up
July 19-23; P.M. Session (Code 612)

Students will be making jewelry from recycled materials. Projects include papier-mâché necklaces, soda tab bracelets and bottle cap necklaces. A fun way to make great jewelry and help preserve the environment.

Animation!

Ages 10 & up
July 26-30; P.M. Session (Code 713)

Students must bring their own digital camera on the first day of class and the remainder of the week. This course introduces students to the fundamental principals of stop-motion animation and explores expression through moving images in a fun and positive environment. Topics include hand-drawn traditional animation, storyboards, greenscreens and live-action stop motion. This course is suitable for all drawing and technology skill levels. Students will take their DVD animations home at the end of the week.

Visual Explorations I

This class is designed for the student who needs more assistance.

This course will offer various media experiences, as well as offer mini lessons on aspects of various cultures. Students will have an opportunity to explore and experiment with visual experiences using paint, yarn, papier-mâché and paper.

Carving Stamps from Your Favorite Designs

Ages 7 & up
June 14-18; A.M. Session (Code 202)

Students will create designs exploring the idea of multiples while learning how to hand-carve stamps using a variety of materials. After developing ideas and carving stamps, children will bring clothes and bags from home for stamp decoration.

Project T-Shirt

Ages 8 & up
July 12-16; A.M. Session (Code 503)

Students will learn the techniques of block and screen printing while creating two different t-shirt designs. The final designs will then be transferred onto the student's own t-shirts! Students will also have the opportunity to create prints on paper from the block and screen stencils.
