From the Juror

I was very impressed with the fine quality of the artwork submitted to the 50th Annual Art Exhibition at the Swope Art Museum. Past Museum Director Howard E. Wooden’s belief that the perspectives of young talent reveal the health and cultural awareness of a community, is verified by the entrants for this show. The proliferation of heartfelt portraits and artwork created to convey a social message demonstrate student awareness and concern for the future.

When judging artwork, I look for originality and emotional expressiveness in addition to technical proficiency. I was particularly delighted to see so many ceramic entries and sculptural pieces that used innovative and resourceful materials. Congratulations to the area’s teachers, who not only encourage self-expression but also guide their students to accessible resources.

The process of selection for a juried exhibition and its prizes is largely subjective. When an artwork is overlooked for inclusion, it does not make that piece any less valued or significant. All students who made the effort to express themselves through art are to be congratulated and admired for their courage. Participating students and their teachers, as well as the staff at the Swope Art Museum, deserve kudos for encouraging and sustaining this long-standing and worthwhile display of regional creativity.
